The Zee Horror Show (1993-2001) is a TV series presented by Ramsay Brothers (except Keshu Ramsay) on Zee TV in the period 1993-2001 . Ramsay Brothers were famous in Bollywood for churning out extremely low budget and cheap horror films in the 70s and 80s. In 1993, they turned their interest towards Indian Television seeing the amount of audience it had. The Zee Horror Show was the first horror television series in India. It had over 700 episodes with about 4-5 episodes required to complete a story. Deepak Ramsay son of Tulsi Ramsay directed more than 200 episodes alone.[1] The show currently reruns on 'Thriller Active' and 'The Horror TV'
The first episode was titled 'Dastak' which was telecast on 9th August 1993 & featured Pankaj Dheer, Shagufta Ali and Archana Puran Singh in the lead. The visual of Archana Puran Singh’s severed head, on a plate on the dinner table, has been imprinted on people's mind forever. Launched as a late night adult show it was later shifted to prime slot seeing its popularity. It aired generally one episode every week.[2] Initially it was a 24 episode deal with Subhash Chandra which later ran for 9 years. [3]
One notable episode was Saaya, known for a psychopath killer Vikranta Jabbar played by Surendra Pal. It's story lasted 4 months.
The show's logo was inspired from The Rocky Horror Show.
Masks and make-ups were brought from London. The museum of Macabre in Mumbai was used to shoot some of the episodes.

Plot[edit]
One of the episodes called 'Raat' (featuring Javed Khan) had its story taken from the Hollywood classic 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'. Yet another episode, 'Jeevan Mrityu', based on dowry system (featuring Pallavi Joshi) gained so much popularity that it was re-telecast on popular public demand. Kohra was based on a mask-maker who becomes a monster after his black magic misfires.
An episode called 'Khauf' was partly stolen from the Indian film Gehrayee and partly from the 1973 Hollywood film The Exorcist. Some episodes were copied from cult Hollywood films like Tehkhana from Evil Dead, Dehshat from Fright Night and Gudiya from Child's Play. Another episode called Taveez was similar to British novel The Monkey's Paw.
Later on Ramsay's 24-year-old son, Deepak Ramsay, started producing episodes with original content using computer graphics and hi-tech wizardry.
Some of the stories were inspired from ghost stories of Tulsi Ramsay's servant's village[1]
Change of name to 'Anhonee'[edit]
In July 1997 a petitioner in Punjab & Haryana high court argued that hororr shows promoted superstitions which was affecting the youth. He requested that shows should be aired only after midnight.
Women and children were a significant part of its viewership base so at the urging of Colgate, the show's sponsor, the show's name was changed to Anhonee with the words The Zee Horror Show written below it. Soon the serial name changed to simply 'Anhonee' from September 1997.[4] The show had to cut down violence and sex. Even in the repeat telecasts shown on Zee Cafe and Zee Smile later such scenes were partially censored.

Ashok Surana was made the co producer of the show along with Ramsay brothers in November 1997. His episodes were directed by Indranil Goswami and would alternate with those made my Ramsay brothers. Some episodes produced by Ashok Surana were Jaal, Aaina & Aakhri Shikar.[5]

Soundtrack[edit]
The opening theme was composed by Ajit Singh & Uttam Singh. The tune was earlier the background score for several movies of Ramsay Brothers with the first one being Purana Mandir (1984) which was rearranged and the result was one of the most memorable theme songs of Indian television.[30][31]. The sinister track had widows wailing ‘aa-aa-aa-aa’ with signs of omen such as thundering of wind in the background with a low techno thump at the end.
The original inspiration of the tune was the opening theme of The Amityville Horror.
The background score was a direct rip-off of several old movies. One such was the 3rd pt. score of The Heroin Busters which was used in several episodes. Another famous tune Fur Elise was also used in both original and remix forms in 'Junoon'.
In one of the episodes 'Darr' songs Tribal Dance & Yeke Yeke are playing in one of the scenes in a bar.
Reruns[edit]
Zee TV in 2002 completed 10 years and started reairing the old episodes till 22nd March 2005.
Zee Cinema telecasted episodes of 1993-94 in movie format. On 9th August 1997, Taveez was telecasted. Rajesh Cable recorded them and Zee Cinema had several reruns of those episodes like Khauf, Taveez, Dastak, Jeevan Mrityu under the title Chills & Thrills till 2004. Rajesh cable later showed these episodes again on its own channels like Karz on 28 March 2012 and Mukti on 31 July 2015.
Zee Cafe aired Season 1 episodes in UK with English subtitles from 2 January 2012 till 22 April 2012.
Zee Smilein 2015-16 showed the episodes of 'Anhonee' series until the closedown of the channel.
A Pakistani channel - Apna Channel started to broadcast Season 1 episodes under the title Apna Horror Show from June 2015. In October 2016 Pakistan government banned Indian shows and this show stopped airing. The show returned in August 2017 and got shut down in November 2018 again for the same reason.
Now Thriller Active Channel available only on Dish TV & Videocon D2H is retelecasting the episodes of Season 1 since 30 September 2018.
A new channel The Horror Tv available only on Airtel Digital TV is showing episodes of Season 1 from 10th May 2019.
Reception[edit]
The show was more popular than the soaps and musical countdowns at that time. It was on Zee's top 10 list for more than 4 years. The show gained impressive revenues and high TRPs throughout its run. It was the longest running show at that time. Generally only one story was telecasted in a month in 4-5 episodes. Each month gave a new story which kept the interest of the audience alive. Children and women made a significant part of its viewership base. This prompted the makers to change the name of the show in 1997.[4]

Recently Zee completed 25 years in 2017 and remembered its top shows in Zee Rishtey Awards which included The Zee Horror Show.
